Adventure is back

------- Francais ci-dessous  -------

Well ! It have been almost a month since I hardly left Christchurch in New Zealand. How many last drinks have we got …?!
Since, I hitch-hiked all the way up to the North Island. I spent 3 days in Wellington to drop my "Available crew" notices and meet up skippers. Then it took me one night to reach Auckland with only one truck caught from the ferry arrival ! Same job over there, making my own publicity. But that spot didn't felt right to me neither so I kept going to Northland to be in the area where cruise boats use to check out.

By doing woofing, I kept contacting over 30 marinas mostly in North Island, spamming their website and facebook page. I made 7 profiles on websites to find crew/boat and update them every day. I also spend hours and days on marinas building a social network and making people know about me. I even distribute my crew business card and I was on the VHF-radio morning news of the Opua marina !

But... despite great fun with some captains, it became a bit boring. The results were to low because of too many constraints : I was too late for the trip season to Australia (Tasman Sea very rough sometime) and almost too early for the Islands (New-Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, ...). My Australian visa forces me to arrive there before mid May and plus, the local cyclones don't help at all !! I could be working in Australia and save money instead ! I was about few hours close to buy a flight ticket Auckland - Australia when, on Sunday evening,  I received THE call. Chris and his wife Lauren are going to New-Caledonia and ask me for a meeting. 16h later we were on the 44ft sailboat (13.2m) talking about how to steer her (the boat) and what I will cook for them for this 8-10 days journey ! Departure on Thursday 20th  if the weather window keep clear !!
Bend on the mainsail !!

The main interest of this detour is about getting my first sailing experience in open water. This is bonus for the future, even if I'll have to spend double price for the flight ticket New-Caledonia – Australia. Indeed, I’ll unlikely have enough time to catch another ride.

Marinas after marinas, skippers after skippers, I have improved a complete different style of hitch-hiking. It have been only about few months that I had an eye on sailing. However, I can already feel that this experience will bring me on a real turn over in my entire life. It is like learning how to walk for the first time.

Only the wind calls the leaving.
Now the land breeze blows in my sail.
Way more that I can imagine,
All what I need is a vessel.
